A sustainable FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE conference

This year, we strive to organise a green and sustainable conference. To achieve our goal, we implemented many measures, some of which you can find below.

By exclusively using a digital abstract book, we avoid wasting paper and unnecessary printing.

This is the first FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE conference that will be a meat-free event! We implemented this measure to reduce our CO2 emissions.

All our dishes will be vegetarian, and prepared as much as possible with locally-sourced food.

Life in plastic’s not fantastic! We will not provide single-use plastic cutlery, but instead will offer reusable cutlery, dishware and glassware sets.

We highly encourage the participants to lower their carboon footprint by choosing forms of transportation with the least CO2 emission.

There are several calculators available (herehere, or here). To get around Cologne during the conference, please consider using public transportation whenever possible.

Education and communication are the key for almost any problem! For the broader public, we prepared multiple talks to raise awareness about the importance of taking care of our environment. For our participants, we planned an attendants-only pub quiz one day before the start of the conference that focuses on lab waste.

There’s no planet B, so let’s take care of the one we have! We will use a waste management system (plastic/ paper/ organic/ other), and all the bottles used during the event will be returned and reused.

This project has also received funding from the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) and the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB)

The Company of Biologists supports this event with a Sustainable Conferencing Grant.
